The 1960s-1970s universities:

In order to meet the demand for higher education, state governments founded universities in the capital cities of the continent during the middle of the 1960s and the 1970s with assistance from the Commonwealth Government. The member universities’ primary goal was to create a new educational model that was distinct from that of regular universities.

Universities established in that period included:
⦁ Macquarie University
⦁ La Trobe University
⦁ Flinders University
⦁ Griffith University
⦁ The University of Newcastle
⦁ James Cook University
⦁ Deakin University
⦁ Murdoch University
⦁ The University of Wollongong

These institutions, as their name implies, were founded in the middle of the 1960s and 1970s, and they have historically been distinct from the more established capital city universities with modest research budgets.

Australian Technology Network (ATN):

The five most creative and adventurous institutions in Australia came together to form the Australian Technology Network (ATN) in 1999 with the goal of delivering significant technological solutions that will improve society and the economy. The ATN was first established in 1975 under the name Directors of Central Institutes of Technology (DOCIT); however, it was dissolved in 1982 as a result of divergent goals.

The universities that make up its membership are:

⦁ RMIT University
⦁ Queensland University of Technology (QUT)
⦁ University of South Australia (UniSA)
⦁ University of Technology Sydney (UTS)
⦁ Curtin University

Originally founded as technical institutes in a capital city, these establishments received official university status subsequent to 1987. These academic institutions are highly skilled in the field of technology.

Group of Eight (Go8):

These are Australia’s oldest and biggest universities, leading the way in both research and teaching. The Group of Eight (Go8), a collection of eight prestigious Australian universities renowned for providing top-notch instruction and research facilities worldwide, was founded in 1999. Many overseas students choose them because of their excellent industry contacts, good rankings, and plenty of research opportunities.

⦁ University of Melbourne
⦁ Australian National University
⦁ University of Sydney
⦁ The University of Queensland
⦁ Monash University
⦁ The University of New South Wales Sydney

These universities hold a distinguished reputation and have the largest research expenditures among the mainland capital’s institutions.

Regional universities:

The Regional Universities Network (RUN), which was founded in 2011, is an association of seven universities in regional Australia. The organization wants to play a big part in helping local communities and economies flourish. The universities create the skilled workers needed for regional growth and guarantee that higher education is affordable and accessible to all.

New generation universities:

To acquaint graduates of higher secondary schools with the new breed of higher education establishments, the Australian government founded colleges of advanced education. But in 1988, this line separating the university sector from the non-university sector was abandoned as it grew intolerable. Furthermore, the network of these universities was founded in 2002 as a lobby group, however it was only around for a short while.

The universities that made up its membership were:

⦁ Australian Catholic University
⦁ Bond University
⦁ Canberra University
